Stourbridge is 40 minutes from Stratford-upon-Avon - Shakespeare's birth
place and home of the world-famous Royal Shakespeare Theatre. It also lies
in the heartland of the Industrial Revolution and 30 minutes from the historic
city of Worcester, capital of the old kingdom of Mercia. Birmingham with
its world-class Symphony Hall and theatre are on our doorstep. The Crystal
Sports Centre, a number of riding stables, ice-rinks and canoeing on the
River Severn are some of the sporting opportunities in the area. A large
shopping complex nearby hosts a ten-screen cinema.
For over forty years we have welcomed visiting Waldorf students from all
over the world for a term or more at Elmfield. Traditionally, students
join our school from class 9 upwards, although occasionally we do have
younger students. We do not accept overseas students into the summer term
of class 11 as our own students sit public examinations and their timetable
is considerably disrupted.
Overseas Students Programme
Our visiting students join their English peers in most of their curriculum
encompassing main lessons, languages, mathematics, science, music, choir,
arts, crafts, sports, drama lessons, etc. All foreign students are offered
lessons in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and have a weekly tutorial
with an Upper School teacher where any questions and difficulties at school
or at the boarding family may be discussed. Individual instrumental lessons
are available for a range of musical instruments.
Boarding
Students board with families selected by the school; the latter are either
teachers or parents of the school. The welfare of all visiting students
is regularly reviewed and the boarding families inspected by our own Boarding
Committee and, from time to time, by the UK National Care Standards Commission.
Admission
On receiving a letter from the parents of the
student we send an application form and ask for this to be returned together
with a copy of the latest school report and a character reference / letter
of support for the stay by the student's class guardian. On the basis of
these documents and possible further telephone conversations we will decide
on offering the student a place. We shall later choose and notify the student
and parents of a suitable host family and send an account for tuition and
boarding fees. Tuition fees from September 2005 are £1880 per term in
Upper School, £1770 in Class 8;
boarding charges are £1365 per term.
